Accumulation of advanced glycation end products in the skin is accelerated in relation to insulin resistance in people with type 1 diabetes mellitus

Diabetic Medicine Mar 21, 2019

Uruska A, et al. - In this investigation, researchers explored the correlation between skin advanced glycation end products and insulin resistance in type 1 diabetes using an AGE Reader. Participants in the study included 476 individuals with type 1 diabetes (median age: 42 years; disease duration: 24 years; HbA1c concentration of 63 mmol/mol). There was a negative correlation between skin autofluorescence and estimated glucose disposal rate. In people with type 1 diabetes, there was strong evidence to support a two-way relationship between insulin resistance and advanced glycation product accumulation in the skin.
