Abnormally high, as well as low, preoperative platelet counts correlate with adverse outcomes and readmissions after elective total knee arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Apr 24, 2019
Malpani R, et al. - As a part of the preoperative workup for total knee arthroplasty (TKA), lab studies are regularly conducted, so researchers sought to associate abnormal preoperative platelet counts with patient demographics, operative variables, 30-day postoperative complications, and readmissions via univariate and multivariate analyses. A total of 140,073 patients were identified as having undergone elective TKA. The current study showed that elective TKA patients with abnormally high and abnormally low platelet counts are at increased risk of adverse outcomes following surgery. Investigators suggested that TKA patients with abnormal preoperative platelet counts need to be given focused attention for optimization and postoperative care.
