A systematic review of interventions for loneliness among older adults living in long-term care facilities
Aging and Mental Health Oct 20, 2019
Quan NG, et al. - Via performing systematic review following PRISMA guidelines, researchers sought to examine loneliness interventions for older adults living in long-term care facilities over the past 10 years. In addition, they categorized the interventions by type, and assessed the relative efficacy of the loneliness interventions in these settings. They identified 15 intervention studies that qualified for the systematic review. Psychological therapies and leisure/skill development interventions were the most addressed interventions. Significant decreases in loneliness following intervention were reported in approximately, 87% of studies. The greatest decreases in loneliness were recognized with laughter therapy, horticultural therapy, and reminiscence therapy. As there was lack of standardized measures and high-quality studies, comparisons between intervention types and generalizability to different populations could not be made in this work.
