A systematic review and meta-analysis on the use of prophylactic topical antibiotics for the prevention of uncomplicated wound infections

Tong Q, et al. - Researchers performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the available evidence on prevention of uncomplicated wound infections by prophylactic topical antibiotics to assess their efficacy. In reducing wound infections after surgical procedures, topical antibiotics were shown to be effective, but with small absolute benefit. Given the global emergence of antimicrobial resistance, they suggested encouraging judicious use of antibiotics and considering the use of antiseptics as a reasonable alternative to topical antibiotics.
