A survey on the prevalence of apathy in elderly people referred to specialized memory centers

International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry May 13, 2019

Manera V, et al. - Employing the 2018 diagnostic criteria for apathy (DCA), researchers examined 166 elderly patients suffering from different neuropsychiatric disorders for the prevalence of apathy and for the apathy dimensions most commonly affected (behavior/cognition, emotion, and social interaction). In addition, they investigated the sensitivity and specificity of those dimensions for apathy diagnosis as well as the concurrent validity of 2018 DCA vs 2009 DCA. Based on the diagnostic groups, significant variation in the frequency of apathy was observed, with 0% of those with apathy in the subjective cognitive decline group, 25% in the mild neurocognitive disorder (NCD) group, 77% in the major NCD group, and 57% in the affective disorder (Aff D) group. For the behavior/cognition dimension, all subjects with apathy fulfilled the criteria; for the emotion dimension, 73.1% fulfilled the criteria, and for the social interaction dimension, 97.4% fulfilled the criteria. Behavior/cognition conferred the highest sensitivity; the copresence of emotion and social interaction conferred the highest specificity. An almost perfect agreement was indicated by the concordance between the 2009 and the 2018 DCA.
