A shift in hip arthroscopy use by patient age and surgeon volume: A New York State–Based Population Analysis 2004 to 2016
Arthroscopy Oct 14, 2019
Schairer WW, et al. - Researchers conducted a population-level analysis of the shifts in the use of hip arthroscopy by different age groups and characterized the proportion of hip arthroscopy procedures done by high-volume surgeons. According to results, hip arthroscopies rose by 495% from 2004 to 2016, from 2.35 to 15.47 per 100,000 New York State residents. The number of high-volume surgeons conducting hip arthroscopies rose from 0% in 2004 to 24.7% in 2016. Over the past 10 years, the use of hip arthroscopy has increased, particularly among adolescents aged 10 to 19 years. High-volume hip arthroscopy surgeons and a growing proportion of the procedures performed by these surgeons have emerged over the same period. High-volume surgeon patients tend to be younger, while surgeons with lower volume tend to have older patients.
