A scoping review of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use treatment interventions for sexual and gender minority populations
Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment Jun 18, 2021
Kidd JD, Paschen-Wolff MM, Mericle AA, et al. - A comprehensive scoping review of the literature was performed on alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use interventions for sexual and gender minority (SGM; eg, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) populations. A total of 71 published SGM substance use intervention studies were identified from 1985 to 2019. In the majority of these studies, sexual minority men were the focus and individual or group psychotherapies for alcohol, tobacco, or methamphetamine use were studied. Differences in intervention outcomes by race/ethnicity were investigated in few studies. There were only a few studies comparing culturally adapted interventions to non-tailored treatments. Findings overall emphasize the necessity for intervention research focused on sexual minority women and gender minority individuals and on cannabis and opioid use.
