A randomized controlled trial of Tai Chi Chih or Health Education for geriatric depression
The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry Aug 03, 2021
Lavretsky H, Milillo MM, Kilpatrick L, et al. - Whether combining Tai Chi Chih (TCC) or Health Education and Wellness training (HEW) with the stable standard antidepressant treatment would afford an efficacious as well as tolerable strategy for improving mood and cognitive functioning in depressed older adults, was evaluated in this 3-month randomized controlled trial. Total 178 patients were randomized. Findings demonstrated that an improvement in symptoms of depression was conferred by both TCC and HEW combined with a standard antidepressant treatment in depressed older adults. The results showed superiority of TCC over HEW in improving general health, but there were no group differences in improvement in mood and cognition.
