A randomized controlled trial of a barrier dressing to reduce nasal injury in preterm infants receiving binasal noninvasive respiratory support
The Journal of Pediatrics Jul 10, 2018
Imbulana DI, et al. - A single-center randomized controlled trial was conducted to ascertain whether the use of a hydrocolloid nasal barrier dressing during binasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, compared with no barrier dressing, reduces the rate of nasal injury in very preterm and/or very low birth weight infants. This trial was conducted in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at The Royal Women's Hospital, Melbourne. For the purpose of this investigation, 108 preterm infants were recruited. In very preterm or very low birth weight infants, prophylactic use of a nasal barrier dressing within 48 hours of commencing treatment with binasal CPAP decreases nasal injury. Researchers did not find significant differences in any secondary respiratory outcomes, or in the rate of common neonatal morbidities.
