A randomized clinical trial of wheeled mobility for pressure injury prevention and better function
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Aug 17, 2018
Brienza DM, et al. - In the nursing home environment, researchers performed a randomized controlled trial to analyze the efficacy of wheelchair assessment and configuration on pressure injury incidence, mobility, and functioning in a wheelchair. Participants were nursing home residents aged 60 and older who used wheelchairs and were at risk for pressure injuries (N=258). They observed that participants with individually configured wheelchairs vs residents with facility-provided wheelchairs improved more in the safe and efficacious use of their wheelchairs. They noted that individual configuration using a comprehensive wheelchair and seating assessment process resulted in safe functioning of nursing home residents at a higher level in their wheelchairs. No difference was seen in the incidence of pressure injuries compared with controls.
