A randomized clinical trial of immediate vs delayed glasses for moderate hyperopia in children 3 to 5 years of age
American Journal of Ophthalmology Jul 05, 2019
Holmes JM, et al. - In this prospective randomized clinical trial (RCT), researchers compared VA and binocularity outcomes in moderately hyperopic children with normal VA and binocularity assigned to glasses vs observation. For this investigation, they randomly assigned 119 (3- to 5-year-olds) participants with hyperopia between +3.00 diopters (D) and +6.00D spherical equivalent to glasses vs observation (with glasses prescribed if deteriorated for subnormal distance VA or near stereoacuity, or manifest strabismus). Findings revealed that there was no common failure for VA or binocularity in an RCT comparing glasses with observation for moderately hyperopic 3- to 5-year-olds with normal VA and binocularity. With inadequate registration and retention, the research was unable to determine whether instant prescription glasses reduce the failure rate, but small failure rates indicate that instant prescription glasses may not be required for these kids to avoid VA and/or binocularity failure.
