A prospective study of dairy food intake and early menopause
American Journal of Epidemiology Sep 21, 2018
Purdue-Smithe AC, et al. - Given the evidence suggesting a potential role of dairy foods in the ovarian aging process, researchers evaluated the association of intakes of total, low-fat, high-fat, and individual dairy foods with the risk of early menopause in the Nurses’ Health Study II. They followed women who were premenopausal at the start of follow-up in 1991 until 2011 for early menopause, and found a 23% lower risk of early menopause in association with total baseline dairy intake of ≥ 4 servings/day vs < 4 servings/week. Associations appeared to be limited to low-fat dairy foods (≥ 2 servings/day vs < 3 servings/month), whereas high-fat dairy intake was not found to be associated with early menopause. Findings indicated that the risk of early menopause could be reduced via modifying the intake of low-fat dairy foods among premenopausal women.
