A prospective analysis of unplanned patient-initiated contacts in an adult cystic fibrosis centre
Journal of Cystic Fibrosis May 18, 2018
Burnet E, et al. - Researchers performed this two-stage prospective analysis of unplanned patient-initiated contacts in an adult cystic fibrosis (CF) center [Cochin Hospital, Paris (France)], from 1 January to 31 December 2015. The data for all adults (≥18 years) who initiated unplanned contacts to the CF centre over four months was analyzed in the first stage in order to determine why and how patients contacted the CF centre and time spent responding to their request(s). Whether high contact frequency was associated with disease severity was investigated in second stage. A great variation was found with respect to the reasons for contacting the CF centre, but <20% of contacts were directly related to symptom management. Overall, it was a significant workload for CF caregivers to answer unplanned patient-initiated contacts. Increased disease severity was found to be related to high contact frequency.
