A novel nomogram with preferable capability in predicting the overall survival of patients after radical esophageal cancer resection based on accessible clinical indicators: A comparison with AJCC staging
Cancer Medicine Jun 20, 2021
Li X, Xu J, Zhu L, et al. - Researchers sought to establish a novel nomogram for overall survival (OS) prediction of esophageal cancer (EC) patients post- radical esophagectomy. They retrospectively analyzed 311 EC patients who had radical esophagectomy. In primary and validation cohorts, the estimated median OS and 5-year survival rates were 44 months and 29.8%, and 52 months and 27.1%, respectively. A nomogram was established using six independent prognostic factors: age, gender, albumin-to-globulin ratio, positive lymph nodes ratio, N stage, and prognostic nutritional index. In primary and validation cohorts, the nomogram showed C-index of 0.75 and 0.70, respectively. A high consistency between actual and predicted OS was suggested by calibration curves. With the help of this novel and practical nomogram with a subordinate risk classification system, OS of patients post-radical esophagectomy can be predicted. This nomogram demonstrated preferable clinical capability in terms of individual prognosis evaluation, than AJCC staging.
