A new panel estimated GFR, including β2-microglobulin and β-trace protein and not including race, developed in a diverse population
American Journal of Kidney Diseases Dec 11, 2020
Inker LA, Couture SJ, Tighiouart H, et al. - It is known that GFR estimation based on creatinine and cystatin C (eGFRcr-cys) is more accurate compared with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) based on either creatinine or cystatin C alone (eGFRcr or eGFRcys), but the incorporation of creatinine in eGFRcr-cys needs specification of an individual's race, and beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) and beta-trace protein (BTP) represent alternative filtration markers that seem to be less impacted by race compared with creatinine, so, researchers used development and validation populations to compare panel eGFR using B2M and BTP in addition to cystatin C (three-marker panel) or creatinine and cystatin C (four-marker panel) with and without age and gender or race. They found that four-marker panel eGFR was as accurate as eGFRcr-cys, without needing specification of race. A more precise race-free eGFR could represent a crucial advance.
