A meta-analysis of outcomes in total hip arthroplasty recipients following pelvic irradiation

Novikov D, et al. - Among 232 hips at a weighted mean follow-up time of 52 months, researchers analyzed the consequences in total hip arthroplasty (THA) receivers after pelvic irradiation. Well documented clinical effects on bone health, leading to pelvic insufficiency fractures and osteonecrosis of the femoral head were recorded following radiation therapy. They conducted a systematic review of published literature through August 5th, 2018 following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analysis protocols. They observed 10% of aseptic loosening rate and revision THA rate, 12%.
