A comparison of payments to a for-profit dialysis firm from government and commercial insurers

JAMA May 21, 2019

Childers CP, et al. - Since the number of people receiving dialysis has increased annually between 1996 and 2016 by 4.3% in the US, researchers sought to evaluate differences in payments from government and commercial insurers to dialysis clinics by analysis of the company’s financial records. Investigators reported that dialysis is costly, but typical cost analysis focuses on Medicare and disregards commercial insurers' contributions. It was noted that two for-profit organizations control the national dialysis market, one of whom - DaVita - operates 37% of the market. This company generates revenues almost exclusively from dialysis and itemizes revenues by the payer.
