Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology Online Sep 05, 2019
Vachvanichsanong P, et al. - By reviewing the records of children aged < 18 years who were diagnosed with SLE from 1985 to 2016 in the Division of Nephrology, Department of Paediatrics, Faculty of Medicine, Prince of Songkla University, Thailand, researchers identify the causes of death in childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE). Findings revealed that there was a total of 331 patients, of whom 77 died, 28.6% within the first year after diagnosis. The authors concluded that the cause of death in cSLE is usually multi-factorial and a single dominant cause is difficult to assign. Sepsis was the most common cause of death, and was the most common condition at the time of death, along with sepsis-related organ failure. Acinetobacter baumannii was the most common organism.
