A 10-year prospective study of bone mineral density and bone turnover in males and females with type 1 diabetes
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Sep 12, 2018
Hamilton EJ, et al. - In a previous study, males with type 1 diabetes (T1D) had lower bone mineral density (BMD) than matched controls without diabetes, but females with T1D had normal BMD. In this longitudinal observational study, researchers determined if bone mineral density (BMD) in males continued to decline, if in females with TD1 maintained their BMD, and if temporal BMD changes reflected changes in bone turnover markers. The present data indicated that while BMD in males with T1D declines early in the course of the disease, it then stabilizes. Findings revealed that BMD in females with T1D remains similar to that expected for age, body mass index, and postmenopausal status.
