AAP guidelines for neonatal care: Managing infants born to COVID-19 mothers

Babies being born to COVID-19 confirmed or suspected mothers present a new set of challenges for the paediatric staff, especially when it comes to preventing perinatal transmission of the virus from the mother to the newborn.

What should you do to protect a newborn from COVID-19 in your hospital? We highlight the steps to providing better neonatal care as recommended in the paper titled ‘INITIAL GUIDANCE: Management of Infants Born to Mothers with COVID-19’ by the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP).

Neonatal units around the world have been handling births of babies born to confirmed- or suspected-COVID-19 mothers. But given the absence of any guidelines for handling births amidst the pandemic, neonatal units may be unknowingly exposing the new-borns to unforeseen threats from the new Coronavirus.
