The cops have been identified as constable Durgesh Pathak, constable Manoj Chowdhary and SI Anjani Kumar, police said. According to the complaint, Dr Rakesh Kumar was on duty at emergency ward of the hospital and at around 1.30 am, Pathak, who was in uniform, came in an inebriated state and had some injuries.

Pathak got into an argument with the doctor and misbehaved with him as he, along with a a pharmacist, began attending him, police said, adding that the cop also tore the register of the ward. Following the incident, Dr Rakesh Kumar informed SI Anjani Kumar and other policemen about Pathak's misconduct. The two cops reached the hospital but they were also in a drunken state, police said, adding that surprisingly they also started misbehaving with the doctor and beat him up.

As the matter escalated, the doctors informed Chief Superintendent of the hospital, Dr R K Gupta and other district officials about the incident. Durgesh, posted at Dohrighat in Mau district, was on leave yesterday and he met with an accident in Sahjanwa and came to Gorakhpur in a ambulance. It came to our knowledge that he had an altercation with the doctor which later turned violent, police said.
Pathak has been sent to jail while as action will be taken against other cops after a departmental probe, Senior Superintendent of Police Shalabh Mathur said. Doctors said the police has given assurance of action against the accused to the officials of the Indian Medical Association, and added that work has been restricted at the OPD of the hospital.
