Two persons have come forward with complaints that a Bengaluru-based pharmaceutical firm conducted unauthorised clinical trials on them, police said.
Jammikunta Circle Inspector Pingili Prashanth Reddy on Sunday said that Boga Suresh, 30, of Kothapalli village in Jammikunta mandal filed a complaint on Saturday. Reddy said that the complainant alleged that he was subjected to clinical drug trials while he was working as a volunteer with a Benguluru based pharma company. Suresh told local media that he was given Rs.24,000 by the pharma company for the drug trials. A similar complaint was made by Chiluveru Ashok Kumar, 27, of the same mandal, said police. He is undergoing treatment in a hospital, police added.
Police said that Vangara Nagaraju, 39, a resident of Nagampet village in the same mandal as the above two complainants, allegedly died in June this year due to complications rising from clinical drug trials. Notices have been issued to the pharma company and investigations are on, police said. Telangana finance minister Etela Rajender has also asked for an inquiry into the incidents. Karimnagar District BJP President Kotha Srinivas Reddy asked the state government to investigate the allegations and take action against the pharma firm. He also asked the state government to pay compensation to the victims.
