Senior medic arrested for smuggling contraband into high security prison

A senior medic attached to the Alipore Central jail in the city for a decade has been arrested for alleged trafficking of contraband, including ganja, liquor and mobile sets into the high-security prison, police investigating the crime said on June 8.
Following inputs the top officials of the jail in south Kolkata had laid an ambush and caught red handed Dr Amitaliquirebh Chowdhury last night while the medic was trafficking 4/5 liters of liquor, around five kilos of ganja, around 35 mobile sets, chargers, blades and cooking spices, the police added.
The Alipore Central Correctional Home, a high security prison, earlier for many times had been in the news after some wardens were caught during smuggling of contraband. But a senior medic, who has been attached to the prison for over past ten years,and involved in smuggling of contraband was unprecedented, a senior jail official said.
Besides, the illegal activities of the inmates in collusion with the government staff, the seizure of cooking spices from the medic meant the convicted and hardened prisoners are believed have food cooked by themselves. The jail authorities have been handed over the arrested medic to the city police, who is expected to produce the accused into a court of law later on June 8.
