A rare keyhole surgery for pancreatic cancer was successfully held at the Government Medical College, Thrivandrum.

The medical team led by Associate Professor of Surgical Gastroenterology department Dr R.S. Sindhu performed the complicated surgery on June 1. The cancer affecting pancreatic glands and the associated organs was treated via whipple surgery. The 14-hour long surgery was performed on a woman hailed from Thiruvalla.

This was the first successful pancreatic cancer surgery carried out at a government hospital in Kerala and also features to be a milestone as it was conducted by a team headed by a lady doctor for the first time in India. The Surgical Gastroenterology department headed by Dr. Ramesh Rajan made a remarkable development in treating cancers of large intestine, stomach and liver via keyhole surgery.
