PGIMER develops low cost indigenous infusion alarm system named IV ALERT
UNI Oct 12, 2017
The Anaesthesia department at PGIMER has developed a low cost indigenous infusion alarm system named IV ALERT for monitoring volume and rate of delivery of intravenous fluids.
The main feature of the device is its ability to alert the health care provider before completion of the set target volume of infusion fluid. This enables the health care provider to take necessary action like replacement of empty infusion bag or termination of flow so that backflow of blood in infusion tubings is prevented. This minimises the risk of thrombosis, embolism and infection and thus increases patient safety. The alarm device was conceptualised by Prof G D Puri, Head of Department of Anaesthesia and the prototype was developed by Clarity Medical Private Limited, Mohali (Punjab).
Experimental testing of the device has been successfully completed by Dr Tanvir Samra (Assistant Professor in department of Anaesthesia) at PGIMER and Mr Arvind Jindal and have reported an accuracy of 99 per cent in more than 2000 observations recorded. The latter was awarded the first prize at Innopharm 2 in Bhopal in February 2017 for the evaluation of the accuracy of the device. IV ALERT was recently awarded FICCI Healthcare Excellence Award 2017 in the category of patient safety. PGIMER Director Jagat Ram signed a MoU for transfer of technology to Clarity Medical Private Limited for further technology development in presence of Prof Rajesh Kuma, Dean PGIMER and Prof D Behera and representatives from the industry partners.
