In a bid to provide relief to the patient, a difficult procedure of per cutaneous endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) was carried out for the first time at Dr Rajinder Prasad Govt Medical College at Tanda, Himachal Pradesh.
DRPGMC Principal Dr Bhanu Awasthi on 19th June told UNI that a patient from Kangra district was not able to eat normally for almost one year due to a neurological disease. He said that the procedure involves inserting and placing a feeding tube through the skin of the abdomen into the stomach with the help of an endoscope. Earlier procedures of similar nature had to be carried out at tertiary care centres outside the state incurring extra expenditure and loss of man days to the patients and their families, Dr Bhanu disclosed.
He said that the procedure was carried out by a team of doctors which included Prof Rajesh Sharma from department of Medicine, Dr B S Rana, Dr Swatenter Gupta from Gastroenterology and doctors from the department of Anaesthesia. He said that the team assistants included Sanjeev, Indu, Kalpana, Ajay and Sahil.
Dr Awasthi while congratulating the team of doctors of his college said that all the doctors of his institute were committed to carry out such procedures in future too to provide relief to the general public.
