New app to mitigate ‘initial default’ in TB cases in Assam

UNI Jun 08, 2018

Taking a step forward in endorsing Information Technology (IT) to tackle detection and cure of TB cases, Assam is soon going to launch a new app to mitigate the chances of ‘initial default’, while also tracking the progress of medication of patients.

The new app has been developed by the Design department of IIT-Guwahati and will be launched in a few months time, Dr NJ Das, State Project Officer (RNTCP), said on June 7. He said, “The app was demonstrated to us yesterday. We have pointed out a few modifications that would be needed and hopefully it can be launched very soon.”

“This new app will be beyond DOTS 99,” Dr Das added. DOTS 99, launched pan-India about three years back, helps track and record timely consumption of medicine by TB patients through a micro-chip installed in the packet of pills. The new app, which will be Assam-specific and will be launched on pilot basis in Kamrup (Metro) district, will seek to bridge the gap between detection of a TB case and start of medication.

Through the app, the hospital or centre which detects a TB case will alert the health centre which the patient will choose for his/her treatment, so that follow-up on the case can be ensured and the patient does not fall off the radar between detection and medication stage. Experts dealing with TB cases point out that in numerous cases, a patient comes to a bigger hospital for diagnosis and on confirmation of TB, chooses to return to his/her original place and start medication there.

However, many patients fail to start their medication owing to various factors, like preferring traditional medicines or financial constraints, and the new app will help link the patient with the health centre or hospital where he/she would prefer to continue the treatment. The new app has been developed by IIT-G, on the basis of a proposal submitted to Department of Biotechnology.
