The Union Cabinet on February 28 approved setting up a new AIIMS at Rewari in Haryana at a cost of Rs 1,299 crore and turning the AIIMS New Delhi into a "world class Medical University".
The new All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) will come up at Manethi in Rewari district. Besides adding 100 MBBS seats and 60 Bachelor Nursing course seats, the new AIIMS will have 15-20 Super Specialty Departments and add around 750 hospital beds.
As per data of current functional AIIMS, it is expected that each new AIIMS would cater to around 1,500 Out Patient Departments (OPD), said Union Minister Arun Jaitley, informing about the cabinet decision. The proposed institution will have a hospital with a capacity of 750 beds which will include emergency/trauma beds, AYUSH beds, private beds and ICU specialty & super specialty beds. In addition, there will be a medical college, AYUSH Block, auditorium, night shelter, guest house, hostels and residential facilities.
The Cabinet also gave approval to the implementation of a 'master plan' to convert the Delhi AIIMS into a medical university. The plan envisages freeing up adequate space and optimizing the infrastructure of the institute for the next 20 years. The project would provide highly specialized state-of-the-art healthcare to the patients and an integrated 'one campus' answer to all the investigative, physiotherapeutic, operative, rehabilitative and vocational needs of the patients. It would ensure smart mobility and accessibility for the patients and become an apex tertiary care centre for advancement of research, clinical applications and management of patients.
