Multi-organ transplantation held at Jipmer

A multi-organ transplantation was performed at the Jawharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer), Puducherry on May 13.
According to a Jipmer release on May 15, organs from a brain dead patient was harvested and it was transplanted them in patients with kidney failure. On May 13, the donor (54), a resident of Villiyanur, while riding on a two-wheeler met with an accident at Thirubuvanai and sustained severe head injury. After first aid provided at Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital, he was referred to Jipmer for further treatment and was hospitalized in a grave condition and underwent treatment including brain operation. However his condition continued to be worsened and he was declared to be brain dead by the concerned experts and the same was conveyed to the donor’s family.
The donor's daughter, a postgraduate nursing student at Jipmer when told about the condition of her father informed that the family wishes to donate his organs to needy patients. Consent for organ donation was given by the children of the deceased. As it was a medico-legal case, concerned police station was intimated and formal request for inquest was made, to allow organ harvesting.
Dr. Kusa Kumar Shaha, Additional Professor, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology (Police Surgeon) gave authorization for organ retrieval for transplantation purpose and made arrangements for performing the autopsy in the Operation Theater itself. One kidney, was transplanted to a needy patient in Jipmer Hospital on the same day itself. Mr. Muthaiyan Sub-inspector of Police (Traffic Police) and Mr Kaliyaperumal Sub-Inspector of Police (Traffic Police), Villiyanur Police station came to Jipmer and conducted inquest and completed other medico-legal formalities.
