MCI, SC advises medical students against enrolling for courses in 4 institutes
Hindustan Times Jul 04, 2019
The Medical Council of India (MCI) and the Supreme Court- Oversight Committee on July 3 notified students applying for postgraduate medical courses to refrain from applying to 4 institutes offering these study courses over doubts in their recognition.
The four institutes under the scanner are- Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute, AMRI Hospital in Bhubaneshwar, National Institute for Education and Research, Delhi, and IGNOU, Delhi. MCI has instructed IGNOU to not provide diplomas in courses such as HIV medicine, health management, geriatric medicine, and maternal and child health.
Meanwhile the Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU expressed surprise over the MCI's decision stating that they have been conducting these courses for over 20 years. MCI had also sought explanation from Kokilaben Dhirubai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute and was informed that the certificate course offered by the institute did not require central government approval. This explanation however, failed to convince the committee. The sudden advisory has left hundreds of students in confusion.
