An infant of four months of age died immediately after polio vaccination which the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) informed to be one of the rarest cases in the subdivision of Ambassa in the northern Tripura district of Dhalai Ambassa (Tripura) on 8th August.
According to sources, the infant identified as Edikel Riang was provided polio vaccination yesterday. Local health workers under Ganganagar block in the subdivision vaccinated the baby of one Jitendra Riang. Immediately after vaccination, the condition of the baby started to deteriorate. The family members rushed the baby to local primary health centre and then to the district hospital. There the baby died and the body was handed over to the family members after post mortem on 8th August. The family members alleged that the infant died due to vaccination.
The Chief Medical Officer(CMO) of Dhalai Dr. Chitan Debbarma said, "It is one of the rarest cases. The infant has died not for vaccination. Actually, the baby has succumbed for the symptom AEFI (Advanced Effect Following Immunization). It can happen in one child among 10 lakhs". However, the administration now must move on to uproot any chance of misconception among people about polio vaccination.
