Amid outpouring emotions and sentiments, leaders of various political parties in Tamil Nadu, including actors Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, today xpressed shock and grief over the suicide of young girl Anitha over not getting a medical seat due to the NEET.
Daughter of a daily labourer, the adi dravida girl, hailing from a rural background in Ariyalur district, was under mental duress, as she could not get a medical seat, despite scoring 1176 marks out of 1200 in the Plus-2 State Board exams. Anitha, who fought against NEET in the Supreme Court, had a cut off mark of 196.5 and would have surely got a medical seat as per the government's earlier admission norms which was based on Plus Two marks. But, the introduction of NEET, made compulsory by the Supreme Court, in which she scored very low marks, dashed her medical dreams, following which she ended her life today. Her body was taken to Ariyalur Government Hospital for an autopsy, even as the Tamil Nadu Government ordered a probe by the District Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).
The incident triggered widespread uproar and anger across
the State as medical college students hit the streets demanding abolition of NEET and blamed the Central and the State governments for the death of a young medical aspirant. Health Minister Dr C Vijayabaskar expressed grief and sorrow over the suicide of Anitha and urged the students not to take such an extreme step under any situation. Expressing his heartfelt condolences to her parents, the Minister promised all help to the family by the Government.
