Health system under dire shortage of financial, human resources: PHFI President
UNI Feb 13, 2019
Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) President and Professor K Srinath Reddy on February 11 said that the health system faces several challenges due to shortage of both financial and human resources, with barriers of access and affordability evident in health equity gaps across the country.
Delivering a 23rd memorial lecture of KS Vyas on 'India’s Road to Universal health Coverage’ being organised by Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS) here, Srinath focused upon Universal Health Coverage (UHC) as an important target of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to be achieved by 2030.
India’s National Health Policy (NHP) of 2017 is also wedded to this idea. India’s present health indicators lag behind those of her neighbours and peers, indicating that health has not kept pace with development, he said.
The presentation acted as a watershed moment in enlightening and developing institutional mechanisms for achieving the much cherished SDGs, he added. On the occasion, he released the compendium of Previous KS Vyas Memorial lectures.
