Gurgaon hospital performs TAVR- latest stitch-less valve replacement without open heart surgery

PTI Apr 07, 2018

Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon successfully performed Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation, a complex and high-end cardiac intervention procedure that provides cardiac valve replacement without cardiac surgery on a 64-year old man without open arteriotomy.

The path-breaking procedure was performed by Dr. Amit Bhushan, Unit Head and Associate Director - Interventional Cardiology, Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon, and an eminent cardiologist with over 1000 transradial angioplasties to his credit, and Dr. Mahesh Wadhwani, Chief of CTVS successfully at Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon on 20th March, 2018 on a patient who had severe narrowing of the heart valve and was shifted from Jammu. The patient had gone into the repeated heart failure and was refused surgery in Jammu due to the high risk involved.

Till now, only 25 to 30 such procedures have been done across the country, and only 1 hospital apart from Paras has performed it in Gurgaon region. In the TAVR procedure, the device is typically inserted via an artery in the leg and guided into a heart just like a stent, with benefits of almost instantaneous recovery, conscious sedation, almost negligible rate of infection, and is less painful and meant for people who are at intermediate or at high risk of open heart surgery.

According to Dr. Amit Bhushan, "It gives us immense pleasure to share that Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon has now become one of the few centers in India, performing TAVR procedure. In India, only 25 to 30 such procedures have been conducted till date, with only some hospitals being equipped with the technology and trained medical staff to conduct surgeries using TAVR.

This procedure is commonly used in the West as a first-line therapy and in places in Western Europe like Germany and Netherlands, it has overtaken SAVR (Surgical aortic valve replacement). However in India, lack of awareness and skilled doctors along with adequate infrastructure and high cost has ensured it as a rarity. We have always believed in upgrading ourselves with advanced medical learning, knowledge, infrastructure, and technology to ensure that the best quality care is delivered to our patients."

Dr. Amit Bhushan, further adds, "In this case, TAVR procedure was performed on a 64-year-old patient, successfully. This highly symptomatic patient who was hardly able to walk even a few steps greatly benefited from this surgery and is miraculously now able to perform all normal activities, all within in a span of 36 hours. Moreover, the patient was able to regain consciousness within minutes after surgery."

Dr. Amit Bhushan, Associate Director, Interventional Cardiology, attributes the entire the success to the heart team comprising of interventional cardiologist, cardiac surgeon, ECHO team, Radiology team and supporting teams such as cardiac anaesthetists and intensivists.
