UNI Jul 09, 2019

A day after a patient was declared brain dead in Navi Mumbai, his heart was being transported for donation to Apollo hospital, Chennai, on 6th July through the green corridor method.

33-year-old Ajay Khainur, from Khalapur of Raigad, had an accident at his workplace and was severely injured. He was found to have multiple injuries & brain edema (Swelling). He was working as a technician in a generator manufacturing factory at Khalapur. He was rushed to a local hospital, for further clinical management he was shifted to Apollo Hospitals in critical condition. He had an episode of convulsion followed by which he developed irreversible brain damage. Despite efforts, he didn't respond to the treatment.

As per the protocols, the patient was declared brain dead on July 5th 2019. He is survived by his wife and 6-year-old daughter. The family was educated about the organ donation and they agreed to donate the organs. A spokesman of the Apollo Hospital said that Liver and Kidney were transplanted on patients at Apollo Hospitals. The other kidney was donated to a patient at Fortis Hospital, Vashi.

As there were no suitable recipients for the heart in Mumbai, through ZTCC & NOTYO a matching recipient was found in Chennai. "A Green Corridor was created on 6th July from Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai to the Airport. A distance of 38 kms was covered in 40 minutes", he added.
