UNI Jul 13, 2018
Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy on July 12 told the Legislative Assembly that the government would consider the setting up of an Oncology wing at the Government General Hospital to provide treatment to cancer patients.
Replying to a question during zero hour, Mr Narayansamy said while, a full-fledged cancer institute is functioning at Jipmer, cancer detection camps are being conducted and medicines being provided free of cost by the GH. He said the demand for the setting up of an Oncology wing is a just demand since over 1000 people die due to cancer here in a year. When we approached the Centre with the proposal, they will show the Jipmer.
Several members who posed supplementary questions wanted the government to set up a separate Oncology wing for Puducherry.
AIADMK member Anabzhagan charged that the more number of cancer patients in Puducherry is due to the unauthorized cell phone towers. N R Congress member Selvam pointed out that more women are getting affected by the disease. He said with GH not having any facility to detect the disease, the surgery department used to do surgery for any lump resulting in the spreading of cancer (in case of cancer) and only inform the patient when the disease reach another stage.
