Gastroenteritis turns epidemic in 37 villages in Nagaland

About 37 villagers are being treated for acute gastroenteritis after it broke out as epidemic type at New Chalkot Village under Peren district on April 30 last.
According to a press statement issued by Village Council Chairman of New Chalkot Village Ngulkhoneh Hangsing said that the outbreak occurred due to heavy rain, which led all potable water sources of the village contaminated and villagers severely affected
by contaminated water. As the condition of the villagers became critical, VCC said it called for distressed help on May 1 to CMO Peren and Assam Rifles postm in Ahthibung.
However, timely response from both Government agencies, the situation was brought under control and adequate medicines given to village ASHA to counter such criticality in future by the Government agencies, VCC said. Two teams led by Dr. Vezokholu Khamo, MO PHC, Ahthibung and Dr. Ramhhgum, CHC, Jalukie along with BFNA (Battalion Field Nursing Assistant) of Assam Rifles reached the village in due time and treated the villagers who were severely affected.
The team leaders informed that the Gastroenteritis, also known as infectious diarrhea, is inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract that involves the stomach and small intestine. Symptoms may include diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Fever, lack of energy, and dehydration may also occur. Transmission may occur due to eating improperly prepared foods, drinking contaminated water, or through close contact with an individual who is infected.
