Expert doctors perform 74 surgeries in Jammu’s border village camp

Established in the year 2000, Shri Onkar Singh Memorial Trust--providing free of cost medical treatment to ailing and needy patients is a boon for the populace of rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir.

 

 

 

 

 

Around 30-member team comprising nine specialised doctors including three from London, headed by Dr K S Charak camped in village Naugran of Bishnah tehsil for one-week and treated people of their sufferings at temporarily created Operation Theatre and Out Patient Department without charging a single penny from November 4 to 11.The surgical and medical camp proved a boon for the poor people of adjoining villages who cannot afford money for surgical treatment of their various problems.Nearly 1000 patients visited the week-long camp, out of which patients for surgery were shortlisted and who underwent surgeries performed by team of specialised doctors.“Nearly 75 surgeries were performed during week-long camp," Dr K S Charak, the founder of Shri Onkar Singh Memorial Trust here said.


He said, “our aim is to give benefits to maximum number of people.”It was in 2000, a trust in the name of his father was set up having five member trustees at present, he said and added, “we are holding regular medical camps in various parts of the country but mainly the focus of our mission remains rural and border belts of Jammu region in J&K.”Dr Charak, who has also donated land to establish base hospital in this remote village, further said, ''We are charging not even a single penny from the patients for undergoing a surgery. Moreover, we also provide free medicines and food to patients.''“This was the 50th camp and apart from Jammu region, we also conducted camps in Uttrakhand, New Delhi, and Gujarat,” said Dr Charak.He said in a week-long camp, 963 OPDs were organised and major surgeries conducted were of Thyroid, kidney stones, orthopaedics and gall bladder stones.“We are spending collectively from our own pockets and treating people,” he said.


Dr Charak however, said that none of the patient had any complications and every surgery was successful and added, “this time was also constituted a team under National Rural Health Mission and the doctors paid visits to the village houses.”“Cases of diabetes, hypertension and cancer were detected among some of the villagers and those who are vulnerable, will be treated by our specialised doctors putting up in Jammu,” he asserted.He added that there was no financial support from the State or the Central Government so far, adding, “we really feel privileged to treat people especially when they go home with a smile on their face.”He added that so far the Trust have performed 30,000 operations and treated around 70,000 patients.
