A mock delivery conducted by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on March 19 led to the arrest of a Malaysian national being arrested at Mumbai airport, and the search of an IVF clinic in Mumbai, operated by a well-known embryologist.
The Indo Nippon IVF clinic and embryologist, Dr. Goral Gandhi are being investigated for their involvement in the smuggling of human embryos after police detained a Malaysian national, Partheban Durai at Mumbai Internation Airport on March 15 for seizing a cannister of human embryos. The DRI found that Durai operated as regular carrier for the embryos and was due to deliver them at Dr. Gandhi's clinic.
The police later recorded a mock delivery of the cannister at the clinic, before arresting Durai. Dr. Gandhi has denied involvement and approached the Bombay High Court. Meanwhile, DRI has said that their search of the IVF clinic has revealed several incriminating documents in support of the alleged smuggling, and their questioning of Durai led him to mention that this is his seventh or eighth trip smuggling embryos.
