Drugs addiction root cause for mental ill-health among youth: Psychiatrist

Noted professor of Psychiatry and President-elect of Indian Psychiatric Society Andhra Pradesh Chapter Dr Ravi Sankar has said that addiction to narcotic drugs was the root cause for the growing mental ill-health among the youth of the present day society.
Addressing a news conference as a part of the World mental health awareness week on October 7, he said ,the drug addiction trend was growing among the youth in alarming proportions in India. He said that drug addicted were indulging in many unwanted incidents which needed serious attention by one and all in the society.
`Domestic problems, loneliness are some of the issues having a serious impact on the minds of younger generation. The society as a whole should view the problem with all seriousness and apply their mind on finding out remedial measures. The elders should observe the mental condition and the weaknesses of their children and take steps to protect their mental health with utmost care.
The parents should also constantly monitor their children's mental condition and keep them away from the mental stress and strain’ he remarked. Dr Ramachandrarao Professor of Rangaraya Medical College, Dr Abdul Salam, Assistant Professor and Senior Resident Doctor Raj Kiran of KIMs Medical college were among those who have attended.
