Doctors save 14-months baby in emergency at Hyderabad hospital

UNI Jun 20, 2018

A team of doctors at Century Hospitals have successfully saved the life of a 14-month old baby girl, who came to the hospital with breathing difficulty and was collapsing, due to a custard apple seed that got struck in her lungs .

If the seed not been removed in time, the situation could have resulted in the death of the child. The baby had accidently gulped a custard apple seed and started facing breathing difficulties. When rushed to Century Hospitals, and on taking an X-Ray and CT scan, it was noted that the seed got struck in the lung ( Left main bronchus). A foreign body, like this could cause great damage to these vital organs and sometimes would require a surgical procedure to remove the obstructing particle.

The Team of experts from Century Hospital conducted necessary tests and identified that the seed was struck in the bronchus zone, the main airway of the lungs. Removing the particle from the trachea was a difficult task considering the fact that the airways are too small in baby, a hospital statement here said on June 19.

While explaining the case, Century Hospital Chief CT surgeon, Dr Hemanth Kaukuntla said, “Endoscopy techniques with specialized equipment has to be used to ensure the situation does not further deteriorate, and the foreign body is removed on June 15. After a two-hour long procedure and with the support of a lot of specialised equipment, the team of experts at the Century Hospitals, removed the seed to save the girl child. The seed was 1.5 cms long and 1 cms wide, big enough to completely obstruct the bronchus.”

Expressing his gratitude to the medical team at Century Hospitals, the father of the child said, “We will be ever grateful to the experts at Century Hospital who have not just done their best on medical parameters but have also helped me and my wife settle down in such a traumatic situation. And now we are happy to see our little angel is safe and healthy.”
