Doctor held for terminating pregnancy of a minor tribal girl gang raped inside a police station

Odisha Crime Branch police on July 7 arrested Dr. Debashish Ghosh in connection with medical termination of the pregnancy of a minor tribal girl, gang-raped inside the Biramitrapur police station in Sundergarh District.

DGP office sources here said, Dr.Ghosh, Medical Officer in Charge of Biramitrapur Community Health Centre, a co-accused in the case and was instrumental in medical termination of the pregnancy of the victim at the behest of the prime accused who has been dismissed from service.
The police officer was arrested and sent to judicial custody by the court after rejecting his bail plea. As per the reports, a 13-year-old tribal girl was repeatedly gang-raped by the Biramitrapur IIC and his friends for four months inside the Police Station. When she got pregnant Dr. Ghosh at the behest of the prime accused had terminated her pregnancy. The political party had urged the National Commission for ST to intervene and direct police authorities to register cases against police officers under ST /SC Prevention of Atrocities Act. They also demanded that in addition to the POA, cases should also be registered against the accused under relevant sections of IPC.
The party leaders also demanded the Commission to direct the Odisha government to set up SIT to probe the cases as per the POA under the direct supervision of the commission, pay compensation to the next of kin of the victim and provide protection to the family members of the victims as they are facing threats from the Police.
