A recent study has reported that of all the diabetic complictions present in rural areas, 60% are due to foot infections.
Diabetes has become one of the most dreaded diseases in the world after cancer. India has seen an alarming increase in Diabetes cases in recent years. As much as we worry about the short term effects of raised blood sugars, long term complications affecting the eyes, heart, kidneys and the feet are a major cause of disability and premature death.
Dr. Preetam Kalangutkar, Consultant Diabetologist, Healthway Hospital, said, “Feet complications are probably one of the easiest to prevent and yet can have the most devastating consequences on the quality of life once you have them. As per a study done on complications of diabetes in the rural areas of Goa, the incidence of foot related complications were 60 per cent followed by heart problems (32 per cent), cataract (20 per cent) and so on. Early detection of problems related to the feet can prevent serious problems including amputation.”
Explaining the reasons behind the high rate of foot ailments in diabetes patients, she said, “Cultural habits such as walking bare feet in the home and in the outdoors is a key factor. Even a minor injury of a thorn can adversely affect a person with diabetes. Additionally, often times people neglect proper care of the feet which includes foot hygiene and moisturising of the feet.”
Dr. Preetam Kalangutkar added, “Due to the high number of cases of foot problems in patients with diabetes, Healthway Hospitals is organising a free comprehensive diabetic foot camp on February 15, 2019, which will address issues related to foot ailments due to Diabetes. It is important for diabetics to follow a certain regimen in order to have healthy feet. The camp will include a session with a Diabetologist and references to surgeon, vascular surgeon and orthopedic surgeon if required.”
