A 45-year-old women has received a new lease of life after undergoing an operation for ruptured and bleeding kidney tumour at a private hospital here. The women had complained of blood in her urine for the past two months and pain in the back and left side of abdomen for a day, after which doctors diagnosed ruptured kidney tumour, which is very rare, especially in middle aged women, doctors said today.

The average age of people diagnosed with kidney cancer is above 60 years. To be diagnosed with bleeding tumour at 45 is a rare thing in women, said Rajinder Yadav, Director Urology and Kidney Transplant at Fortis, Shalimar Bagh. He added that a left radical nephrectomy (removal of whole kidney with surrounding tissues) was performed, recently on her, after the kidney was found ruptured and bleeding with blood clots within and surrounding tissues.

High blood sugar and low haemoglobin made matters worse for the doctors as it entailed anaesthetic and intraoperative cardiac risks, doctors said. After the bleeding from the tumour was stopped, she was transfused blood to increase the hemoglobin level, Yadav said.
