CARE hospitals performs first pediatric kidney transplantation in AP

A team of doctors at CARE hospitals in Vishakhapatnam achieved a major breakthrough in the field of organ transplant by successfully performing their first pediatric kidney transplant in Andhra Pradesh on a seven year old girl.
Addressing a media conference here on Tuesday, noted nephrologist Dr A V Venugopal (CARE hospital), Vishakhapatnam said that the girl had been on the support of dialysis since the first year of her birth due to an inherited condition called bilateral multi-cystic dysplastic kidneys. The girl was undergoing CAPD, a kind of dialysis, thrice daily with a lot of hardships.
He said that along with a team of doctors consisting Dr Karuakar Padhy (vascular surgeon) Dr C H Subbarao (urologist) Dr Suman (urologist), Dr T Mohan S Maharaj (anesthetist), Dr Anuradha (anesthetist) Dr M K Priyadarshini (department of nephrologist), he successfully performed a six hour long complicated surgery.
Dr Venugopal said a battery of tests were conducted on her paternal aunt who was the kidney donor and after attaining all the legal formalities, a kidney transplant was conducted on August 25. He said that this was the first pediatric kidney transplant in the new Andhra Pradesh state giving a new lease of life to the child. However, she should be on medication life long, he said.
