Bengal fondly remembers Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, on his birth anniversary

The birth anniversary of architect of modern Bengal and second Chief Minister Bidhan Chandra Roy was celebrated on July 1 throughout West Bengal with due respect.

 


Dr B C Roy was one of the foremost national leaders of the 20th century. A legendary physician, distinguished political leader, philanthropist, educationist and social worker, he was one of the longest serving Chief Ministers and is rightly hailed as the Maker of Modern West Bengal. In the memory of Dr Roy, Doctor's Day is celebrated in India on July 1, and is cherished as a great physician even today.

To commemorate the day in a more useful manner a number of other programmes, including blood donation camps, were organised in different parts of the state where large number of people paid respect to the departed leader and donated blood. Dr Roy born on July 1, 1882, and died on the same date in 1962 at the age of 80. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remembered Dr Roy on the occasion, “Remembering former Bengal Chief Minister Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy on his birth and death anniversary,” Ms Banerjee tweeted.

“The day is celebrated as National #DoctorsDay in his honour. My best wishes to all doctors across the world. Keep doing good work for one and all,” she added. To mark this day, Union Ministry of Health in a tweet said, “The National Doctors Day is observed on 1st July to commemorate the birth anniversary of the legendary physician, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, who contributed greatly to the Indian Medical Science. Let's honour & salute the contribution of #doctors to health & growth of the country.”

Indian National Congress tweeted, “We remember Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, an eminent Indian freedom fighter and second Chief  Minister of West Bengal, on his birth anniversary. He led the Civil disobedience movement in Bengal and is is considered as the 'Maker of Modern West Bengal.”
