AIIMS doctor builds small ventilator costing as less as Rs. 35,000

The Indian Express Dec 12, 2018

A neurosurgeon and robotics engineer from AIIMS, Delhi have built a small ventilator that comes fitted with a tablet but can be connected via Android phones as well.

The portable ventilator costs just about Rs. 35,000, making it a lot more affordable for patients and families to use. The first patient who will be testing out the device suffers from cervical spine disease. His condition required him to be on life support all his life and his family was forced to keep him in the hospital as they couldn't afford to purchase a standard ventilator which currently costs between Rs. 5 to 10 lakhs. Dr. Deepak Agarwal, the inventor of the small, portable ventilator said that they are now training the family to use the new device, so they can take the patient home.
