Asia's first female neurosurgeon passes away at 86

Last week, the medical community in India and Asia lost an eminent personality, Dr. TS Kanaka, the first female neurosurgeon.
Dr. Kanaka passed away in Chennai after a brief illness. She was 86 years old. Dr. Kanaka born in 1932 and raised in Chennai, obtained her MBBS in 1954 and MCh in Neurosurgery in 1968. She was the third female neurosurgeon in the world and the first in the continent.
Dr. Kanaka is also the first neurosurgeon in India to have performed chronic electrode implantation in the brain. She has received various accolades for her work in stereotactic surgery, a minimally-invasive form of surgery and was commissioned as a medical officer in the army during the Indo-China war.
