A two-year old child died of Shigella virus infection in Kozhikode Medical College hospital on July 23.

Sources said the boy was from a neighbouring district and was admitted to the hospital where the child has succumbed to the disease. His twin brother is undergoing treatment in the hospital for the same ailment. Shigella virus, affecting the intenstine, had claimed four lives in this district in 2016. Seventeen persons were succumbed due to the deadly Nipah Virus (NiV) infection in Kozhikode and neighbouring Malappuram districts in May 2018.
