A seven-month-old girl underwent an operation in the Wadia Hospital for children in Mumbai to remove the small fragments of an LED bulb that she had swallowed accidentally some time back.
The girl, Ariba from Chiplun, had accidentally swallowed an LED bulb while playing with a toy mobile, which led to persistent cough and fever. Parents, who presumed that their daughter had swallowed a thread or mobile pin, took her to local physicians but her condition remained unchange.
An x-ray then revealed foreign body in the right lung. After a week they admitted their child to the Wadia Hospital for Children for treatment, stated an official release issued by hospital on Wednesday. To remove the foreign objects from her body, a bronchoscopy was done wherein an intravenous course of antibiotics and steroids were given for two days to clear the infection and granulations of the airway which blocked the foreign body, Dr. Divya Prabhat, head of Department ENT, was quoted as saying in the release.
Following this, bronchoscopy was repeated and within two minutes, this foreign body was removed using forceps. "To our surprise this happened to be a 2 cm LED bulb, which had not been seen earlier," she said further. Ariba’s father thanked the Wadia Hospital’s team for saving the daughter’s life. "We were completely unaware of the fact that our child swallowed an LED bulb, but the doctors here diagnosed it accurately and immediately took corrective measures," he said.
